He Hates Me, He Despises Me
This is an embarrassing first: I got stood up. I had lunch plans with Mr Spite. At the designated time and place, he wasn't there. I went to my office and checked my messages but there was no messages from him. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought that maybe he was running late. I waited 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 minutes - all well beyond my usual grace time. Then, I thought I should seek him out - perhaps he had got caught up in work and forgotten about our lunch plans. I went to inquire but was told that he was not at his desk, nor anywhere else in the office. At that point, I was infuriated. I believed that if he was running late, he could have sent a message from his Blackberry to let me know that he was running late or he needed to reschedule. Famished, (I had been waiting over 30 minutes!) I went to get lunch.
He later called my office and began the conversation by saying that he had tried to call me before but I hadn't answered my phone. I asked why he didn't leave me a voicemail? I asked hi, didn't you have your Blackberry? Yes. I asked, why didn't you send an email to cancel? He had no answer. Annoyed, I quickly got off the phone.
I had heard more than enough. I was not interested in getting to know someone who stood me up, who didn't have the slightest courtesy to give notice notice, and ultimately, not even offer as much as an apology. For me, it was a clear indication that he did not like me even a smidgen. He didn't respect me. There was no acceptable explanation for such uncouth behaviour. The notion of leaving a note, an email message or even a voicemail stating their (lame) reason would have been minimally sufficient. At the very least.
I most certainly was not going to make excuses for his bad behaviour, and certainly not accept that someone treats me as such.
Don't go and make excuses for him.
